When one’s aim is to be Taboo, the concept of which is to be controversially naughty and go against the grain of propriety. Such as savaging a man’s throat or partaking in an incestuous relationship with one’s sister – Relishing both activities shamelessly, like in HBO’s Game of Thrones.
This freedom of expression to be Taboo is not welcomed throughout all TV channels however, especially as “You can’t have naughtiness like Game of Thrones on The BBC, you can’t stab anyone, or eat them!”, says critically acclaimed, creatively shackled, award winning actor Tom Hardy when discussing the boundaries for his 2017 passion project and drama – Taboo. Despite the limitations of Hardy’s vision for gruesome scenes, Taboo has its fair share of Jack the Ripper-esque moments supported by an array of Game of Thrones actors to make up for The BBC’s censorship.
Of which, The BBC are adamant in their preservation of the company in order to uphold their history of mediated broadcasting decorum. Despite all the involvement of US channel FX, Taboo remains a unique, meticulous, and vehement British historical drama.
The term “drama” is quite broad in its implementation. For Hardy however, a piece is “not REALLY a drama until someone gets their kit off or screams or gets covered in blood”. If one is still unsure how to really capture the drama genre as an artist and is in doubt, or has got “nothing to offer the world, then get naked, cover yourself in paint, cry, or just like bang your head against a table, because that’s drama”. Fairly self-explanatory.
