Dedicated to his late father Leonard Luhrmann, who passed away in 1999 before the beginning of filming, Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar Winning Moulin Rouge! became his passion project and labour of love, one to be carried out with devoted fervour, especially after being gifted with his father’s parting words which were beautifully and simply put – “Focus on the film”.
Given the extremely sporadic and tumultuous days throughout production and at times Luhrmann saw no light at the end of the tunnel, he was comforted by remembering what his father had said and ultimately did not quit. Leonard’s advice, upheld and invigorated by Baz’s determination, sparked the fire for supreme and emotive cinematic excellence and from within the impassioned footage from the trialling 192 day shoot – Materialised a revered musical drama romance masterclass!
