Fresh out of rehab, misunderstood child superstar tells his side of the story!
On paper, this is a movie I hate. Somehow, though, against all odds, Shia LaBeouf made me fall in love with Honey Boy – a project that started out as a therapy exercise and was then developed (with documentary filmmaker Alma Har’el) into a film based on LaBeouf’s own troubled youth.
Performance-wise, Noah Jupe, Lucas Hedges, and LaBeouf himself are a dream team. Both young actors appear meticulously in sync, delivering performances that provide a fluid continuity from adolescence to adulthood.
LaBeouf’s portrayal of Otis’ (and essentially, his own) father was a brave choice that absolutely paid off.
