“It was never really my plan to become a filmmaker” says Raukokore, Waihau Bay, New Zealand born
Oscar Nominated (Drama Short Two Cars, One Night)
Oscar Winning (War Comedy Feature Jojo Rabbit)
Painter, Actor, Writer, Director and Producer – Taika Waititi.
Born 16 August 1975 to His Mum, Robin (Cohen) who comes from Ashkenazi Jewish, Irish, Scottish, and English descent, and His Dad, Taika Waititi Sr. – Farmer and Artist who was Māori (Te-Whanau-a-Apanui), and a founding member of the gang Satan’s Slaves.
Waititi’s parents split when he was 5, and he lived mainly in Wellington with his Mum but travelled regularly to his Dad’s home in the Bay of Plenty on the East Coast, and called it the “weirdest coupling ever” of two parents.
Despite being very poor, with Robin being a solo Mum holding down “like three jobs at a time”, she was still thoroughly invested in her Son and pushed him in the direction of art, to pursue one of the “most unstable jobs that earns no money”— The gift of freedom and uncertainty is far greater than the certainty of becoming a grey stiff in an office.
854 million USD later, made from Thor: Ragnarok, it is both an incredibly heartbreaking and heartwarming detail that it was both Mum and Son’s “dream to have a microwave”
Embodying the essence of a creative nomad, Waititi studied Drama at the Victoria University of Wellington to find where he thrived, dabbling and drifting from illustration to acting, comedy to painting, music to photography.
“Filmmaking just happened to be the one thing that stuck – Becoming interested in a medium which involved many mediums and I could oversee lots of those different facets from music all the way through to acting – which I was already doing – and writing and directing and also the photography of those images”.
